Single, Free, and Thriving: The Rise of Divorce Parties

Divorce Parties Are Totally a Thing, and We’re All for It

Who says the end of a marriage has to be all tears and tissues? If TikTok has anything to say about it, divorce parties are taking off in full swing—and it’s giving “new chapter” a whole new meaning. Women everywhere are hitting the dance floor, clinking glasses, and unapologetically celebrating their freedom. Because, honestly, what better way to close one chapter and dive into the next than with your best friends, a killer playlist, and maybe even a little black dress that screams, “I’m back”?

Why Divorce Parties? Why Not?

We throw parties for almost every milestone: birthdays, promotions, even pets’ birthdays. But when it comes to a life change as big as the end of a marriage, it’s time we start embracing the idea of celebrating that, too. Divorce can be painful, no doubt, but it can also be empowering. More and more women are turning to divorce parties as a way to say goodbye to what didn’t work and to make space for all the good things to come.

We Chatted with Jeniel, Who Recently Celebrated Her Divorce and Is Unapologetic About It (Pssst! check out a clip of her divorce party on TikTok: @jenielgangan)

One woman who recently celebrated her own divorce party is Jeniel Gangan, who’s all about encouraging women to make this milestone unforgettable. Her divorce party was nothing short of fabulous. “Honestly, the idea came from my sister, who has been my pillar throughout this ordeal,” Jeniel shared. “She smelt the smoke from the get-go, but I was intoxicated by the flames.” After two rollercoaster years of marriage, Jeniel was ready for a fresh start—and so were her friends and family, who rallied to throw her this unforgettable party. “When I eventually filed for divorce and the ink was finally dry, they were so overjoyed that they banded together to throw me this party.”

The vibe? Pure liberation. “Honestly, it was a bit of both—‘Thank God it’s over!’ and ‘Hello, new me!’” she said. “There are many women who suffer in silence from narcissistic abuse because of the stigma that follows divorcees, and I hope that I have assisted in paving the way to break that stigma.”

The Essentials for an Unforgettable Divorce Party

  • Dress Code: This is your night to shine. Jeniel’s advice? “Put on your revenge dress—actually, scratch that, the best revenge is never giving them access to you again!”
  • Epic Playlist: For Jeniel, Glorilla’s T.G.I.F was the night’s anthem, along with feel-good R&B and some Chris Brown jams. An empowering playlist is key to keep the energy high.
  • Party Decor: Go big with divorce-themed balloons, cheeky signs, and maybe even a cake, like Jeniel’s that says, “Legally Single” and “Officially Done”. She decked out her space with bold decor and made it a night to remember.
  • Signature Drinks: It’s your time to toast to new beginnings. From “Freedom Fizz” to “New Chapter Negronis,” give your cocktails fun, personalised names that fit the theme.
  • Guest List: Only your besties, please! Jeniel’s friends and family who knew her story were thrilled to celebrate her fresh start, offering unwavering support.

Why It’s So Much More Than Just a Party

Yes, divorce parties are fun, but they’re also empowering. They’re about reclaiming your story, deciding for yourself what life after marriage looks like, and taking ownership of your happiness. And while the wedding day is all about a union, the divorce party is a celebration of independence, self-love, and resilience. Jeniel summed it up best, saying, “In a society that tells us divorce is a failure or something to be ashamed of, I want to tell any woman out there that has experienced narcissistic abuse, censorship, infidelity, or even those that have been isolated from their loved ones and have made the difficult decision to leave, it is okay! Stand tall, be proud and celebrate your wins, because leaving a toxic marriage is indeed a win.”

Here’s to New Beginnings

So, if you’ve been through it, and you’re ready to step into the next chapter, throw that party, wear that outfit, and blast that playlist. Because divorce parties are here, and they’re the celebration we never knew we needed.
